KBR was appointed as the Program Management Consultant on the Doha Expressway Program in October 2010 to oversee, manage and deliver this extensive Infrastructure Program on behalf of Qatar’s Public Works Authority, Ashghal.

Over the last 9 years, KBR has delivered a world class road network which will act as the backbone for Qatar’s future, in line with their 2030 Vision, as well as provide the major transportation routes for the upcoming FIFA World Cup in 2022.

To give an idea of scale, the Program has consisted of 800km of new roads, over 200 major interchanges, over 300 bridges and underpasses, 750km of footpaths and 750km of cycle paths. It has laid 16.5 million tons of asphalt, 16 million tons of concrete and 160 million tons of fill material and has processed payments in the area of $20 billion. At peak, the Program’s workforce was approximately 55,000 people from 64 different countries, representing 2 percent of Qatar’s overall population.

One of the major projects KBR has overseen is the New Orbital Highway and Truck Route. Located west of Qatar’s capital city in Doha, most of project has been constructed in a desert environment, providing significant logistics and construction challenges.  

The new 190km route, which officially opened in 2018, includes 22 new multi-level interchanges and is already delivering significant benefit to Qatar. The route is providing connectivity to different important points in the country, such as the new Doha Port and other strategic developments, whilst reducing traffic and congestion within Doha. The free-flowing interchanges also create safe, high speed movements around the outskirts of Doha.

As a result of the efforts of the 600+ KBR staff who have worked on the Program throughout the past 9 years, KBR has developed a strong and lasting relationship with Ashghal and continues to support delivery of the road networks and other critical infrastructure projects across the country.

KBR’s longest serving member of the team is Mohammed Badurdeen with 3,286 days on the Program – nearly 9 years. Congratulations to Mohammed and the entire KBR team for their contributions.
