Ben Sawford, Global Vice President of KBR Advisory Consulting, leads the Consulting business out of the UK where KBR is helping support the Ministry of Defence’s efforts to comply with the government’s Net Zero 2050 initiative.

Our world as we know it is in the midst of an energy revolution. An unavoidable and equally necessary transition to a zero-carbon future will affect all areas of society. Countries, industries and investors around the world have announced plans to meet stringent social and environmental goals and KBR Advisory is positioned front and center to make these aspirations a reality.

The need for effective energy transition is not a new concept. However, industries and markets around the world are in a state of significant flux, amplified by the COVID-19 pandemic, and the speed of change to alternative, resilient energy supply is unprecedented. It is now more important than ever to have a trusted, experienced advisor that can adapt and deliver strategic, innovative solutions in an ever-changing global environment.

From studies and planning to execution and ongoing maintenance and monitoring, KBR is an industry-leading advisor on solutions for aerospace and defense, energy, intelligence, and civil service markets. KBR’s Advisory business is a trusted advisor to clients around the globe, designing innovative solutions, optimal process and specialized technologies needed to achieve goals and objectives. As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent impact on the industries we serve, KBR Advisory is adopting agile business strategies and reimagining client engagement in order to continue solving the problems of tomorrow, safely and efficiently.

KBR’s Advisory business is a leader in decarbonization strategies and is helping governments build a roadmap for energy transition. In Singapore, a country that has built its wealth on global trading and advancements in technology application, they aim to reduce fossil fuel emissions and transition to a downstream low to zero carbon economy. KBR, through collaboration with the Singapore Prime Minister Office (PMO), is assessing potential sources of hydrogen imports to the country, evaluating the scope and scale of downstream applications, determining the feasibility of utilizing the country’s existing infrastructure and recommending solutions based on existing policy on the use of hydrogen across Singapore.

Meanwhile in the UK, KBR is helping support the Ministry of Defence’s (MOD) efforts to comply with the government’s Net Zero 2050 initiative by meeting climate change resilience, helping reduce emissions and providing leadership for policy change. The MOD accounts for more than fifty percent of carbon emissions across the UK government and our teams have been engaged in looking at sustainable operations and opportunities across all MOD operations. In particular, working with KBR Advisory and the Government and Technology Solutions teams, KBR authored a joint MOD/Industry white paper titled Roadmap for Sustainable Defence Support that discusses how UK forces can adapt to carbon efficiency while sustaining force elements at home and abroad.

In May this year KBR signed a Master Service Agreement with JX Nippon Oil & Gas Exploration Corporation, a leading integrated energy, resources and materials group in Japan. KBR will provide technical consultancy services in relation to developing concepts and technology recommendations for the capture of CO2, reinjection, and production of blue (i.e. carbon free) hydrogen.

Another key element of our energy transition strategy is the application of green technologies to support a reliable, renewable future. K-GreeN™, KBR’s green ammonia process, furthers this notion by achieving low or zero greenhouse emissions through lower energy consumption at lower capital cost with state-of-the-art electrolysis and air separation sections. KBR is the world leader in offering reliable, efficient solutions in ammonia and the high level of operational flexibility and agility of K-GreeN™ adds market value to the increasing demand for sustainable technologies.

“KBR is shaping the future of energy transition by defining and meeting the demands of tomorrow,” said Ben Sawford, Global Vice President of KBR Advisory Consulting.  “This is no longer just about cheap clean and renewable electricity, the transition is about harnessing that power, transporting it and embedding it, sustainably, into global supply chains”.

“From supporting the decarbonization of nations to harnessing the power of renewable, natural resources, we’re helping create a carbon neutral future through smart and sustainable solutions,” he added. “Moreover, understanding the technology and strategies to implement such change.”
