KBR's Expressway Programme team in Doha, Qatar recently celebrated the completion of critical work on one of the world's largest road and transport infrastructure projects, delivering two major milestones.

The Qatar Expressway Programme employs 51,000 workers and will deliver 900 kilometres of new and upgraded roads and 348 bridges and underpasses. Since 2010, KBR has worked as the Programme Management Consultant on behalf of the client, Ashghal (the Public Works Authority of Qatar). KBR has 300 professionals from around the world providing technical and support expertise and managing 22 construction contractors and eight supervision consultants.

In October, two critical parts of the Expressway Programme, the Dukhan Highway East project and the first phase of the Al Rayyan Road Upgrade, reported the completion of pivotal segments.

"Qatar's vision for transportation infrastructure is unprecedented," said KBR's David O'Reilly, Programme Director in Qatar. "The scale and scope of the road network being built will support national development and economic growth for generations to come. KBR's delivery of these two milestones demonstrates how our project management team is delivering an incredibly complex programme on schedule," he continued.

On the Dukhan Highway East project, the KBR team completed 90 percent of tunnel structural works for one of Qatar’s most prominent stakeholders, Education City. Education City is the home to Qatar Foundation and eight global universities as well as the new tunnel which will support a next-gen tram system called the Automatic People Mover (APM).

Nearly 100 people were devoted to the construction of the six meter high and ten meter wide tunnel, working 130,000 man hours and using 18,000 cubic meters of concrete.
Meanwhile, on phase one of the Al Rayyan Road Upgrade, the KBR project team celebrated the completion of structural works for the critical Al Qalaa interchange. The 12 kilometer Al Rayyan Road Upgrade project is divided into four phases and will create multiple free-flowing interchanges. Phase one is expected to be complete in the first half of 2017.

Looking ahead, the KBR project team is focused on completing two major projects in Qatar which will introduce approximately 44 kilometers of new and upgraded roads in the center of the country. The two projects – the Dukhan Highway Central project and the Al Sheehaniya – Leatooriya – Lijmiliya Link Road – will double the traffic capacity of the existing highways and enable more efficient movement of material goods and people between urban and rural parts of the State of Qatar.
