Advancing the UK’s Hydrogen Economy with Low-Carbon Innovation – KBR’s H2KPlus

Publish date

The UK’s largest proposed low-carbon hydrogen facility, EET Hydrogen’s HPP2 project, is set to produce 230,000 tons of blue hydrogen annually. This project would transform the nation’s energy landscape, accelerating the shift toward cleaner industries. At the core of this transition is KBR’s H2KPlusSM technology, a scalable and highly efficient solution that significantly reduces carbon emissions while ensuring a reliable supply of hydrogen for industrial and energy applications.

The ability of H2KPlus to scale hydrogen production while maximizing carbon capture efficiency makes it crucial for the UK’s hydrogen strategy. By delivering a cost-effective and dependable low-carbon energy source, this project positions the UK as a leader in hydrogen innovation, supporting the transition to a sustainable, net-zero future.

“KBR’s H2KPlus is an advanced blue hydrogen production technology engineered to deliver affordable, high-purity, low-carbon hydrogen on a mega industrial scale,” said Hari Ravindran, SVP & Global Head, KBR Technology Solutions.

The system integrates KBR’s proprietary Reforming Exchanger System (KRES™) with steam methane reforming (SMR) and carbon capture technology, enabling industries to transition to cleaner fuels while maintaining operational efficiency.

As a key part of the HyNet cluster, one of the UK’s chosen Track 1 industrial clusters, HPP2 will have a capacity of 1,000 MW, supplying hydrogen to industrial users, power generators, and the transport sector. This initiative will help cut around 1.8 million tons of CO₂ emissions annually, equivalent to removing 700,000 cars from UK roads, making a tangible impact on the country’s net-zero ambitions.

By 2030, hydrogen is expected to play a pivotal role in the UK’s clean energy mix, contributing to the national target of 10 GW of low-carbon hydrogen capacity. Through its deployment in HPP2, KBR’s H2KPlus technology is helping drive this vision forward —providing scalable, economically viable hydrogen solutions for a cleaner, more sustainable tomorrow.
