Principal Systems Engineer

Government Solutions U.S. – National Security Technologies Group
Virginia, United States

The U.S. government has unique challenges and responsibilities that often keep it from being able to adopt new technologies or capabilities that companies such as Amazon, Google and Microsoft can provide. In the National Security Technologies Group, Dan Marquez works to help find the best solutions to everyday problems and to cut through hype and noise to effectively present those solutions to key government decision-makers and leadership.

One example was helping create a strategy for a government customer for implementing containers (executable units of software that package application code in such a way that it can be run anywhere) while avoiding potential FOCI (foreign ownership, control or influence) issues that don’t typically apply in the commercial space.

Being on the forefront of new technology is what Dan loves most about his job.

“I get to see the newest and greatest offerings from vendors across multiple sectors, from artificial intelligence and machine learning to distributed ledger technologies (blockchain) and zero-trust access models,” he said.

Just as Dan supports government customers, he also feels supported in his research by his KBR colleagues, an example, he said, of his favorite ONE KBR Value, “We Empower,” being put into action.

“While working through my independent research and development process, I had a chance to receive feedback from throughout KBR,” he said. “I had several people take time out of their busy schedules to provide help and mentorship. The fact that KBR has an incubator for good ideas that empowers people to work with others and then use that feedback to hammer ideas into reality is something that I haven’t seen elsewhere.”
