Sellafield Partnership Sets Ambitious Roadmap for the Future

Publish date

A £7bn programme of major nuclear infrastructure projects supported by KBR has set out its ambitious strategy for the next five years.

The Programme and Project Partners (PPP) at Sellafield was mobilised in 2019, appointing KBR as the integration partner, with the purpose of transforming major infrastructure delivery at the Sellafield nuclear site in the north of England. The partnership brings together KBR, Sellafield Ltd as the client, three delivery partners, and a wider supply chain to deliver a £7bn programme of major infrastructure projects over a 20-year period. Each of the projects will play a vital role in ensuring Sellafield can safely empty ponds and silos, manage the waste and store it safely for decades to come.

As a partnership that was created to push boundaries, inspire change and make a lasting impact on infrastructure delivery at Sellafield and beyond, the strategy builds on the work done to date and outlines the steps that will be taken in the next five years to make that a reality, and bring the benefits promised to stakeholders.

“KBR is very proud to be part of this strong partnership, especially when we reflect on the achievements so far, and we look forward to the exciting future ahead,” said John Devlin, Vice President within KBR’s Government Solutions International business. “On an infrastructure delivery programme of this scale, with multiple in-flight major projects, we’re showing our ambition and what can be achieved by working together as a team of teams alongside our supply partners.”

Andy Sharples, Projects Director for Sellafield Ltd, said: “I am excited to see the new strategy for our PPP partnership being brought to life during year five of the model, benefiting our major capital programme and contributing to Sellafield Ltd's mission of creating a clean and safe environment for future generations.

“Our PPP partners are a vital part of the vision I set out last year to become a top-performing infrastructure delivery organisation. Sellafield Ltd’s plan for the next two years sets us up for delivery success over the next twenty years, focusing on achieving zero harm 24/7; delivering projects on time, within budget and to high-quality standards; developing our skills and capabilities; raising our reputation in the industry; implementing our supply chain strategy; and incorporating sustainability throughout the project lifecycle.

“It's a pleasure to see the partnership becoming stronger as an integral part of our Sellafield.”

KBR’s role centres around uniting the partnership and providing programme management expertise to transform traditional project by project delivery and maximising all the benefits that come from a highly collaborative programmatic approach.

The partnership has mobilised a team of approximately 1,400 people, including 350 KBR employees, delivering a portfolio worth over £337 million per annum that will enable the decommissioning and remediation of Sellafield’s legacy facilities.
